The most dominant manufacturer of CDMA chips in the market at the moment is Qualcomm, and TechCrunch is reporting via their reliable sources that Apple has indeed placed an order for these CDMA chipsets for the CDMA version of the iPhone 4.
Sources with knowledge of this entire situation have assured me that Apple has submitted orders for millions of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone run due in December. This production run would likely be for a January launch, and I’d bet the phone is nearly 100% consistent with the current iPhone 4 (with a fixed internal insulatorKeep in mind that manufacturing a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 means making a whole new baseband from scratch which would be compatible with Verizon’s CDMA network only. If this report is indeed true, then Apple will launch the iPhone 4 on Verizon’s CDMA network. Lets hope that this one really comes out as true so that AT&T’s crappy iPhone exclusivity is ended once and for all.on the antenna).
