iPhone developer iH8sn0w has just released a new version of iREB which is compatible with all iOS 4.2.1 devices. You can use it to bypass 1604, 1603, 1602, 1601, 1600 error in iTunes during custom iOS 4.2.1 firmware restore which has been created using either Sn0wbreeze or PwnageTool.
iREB 4.0.x/4.1/4.2.1 [r3] supports the following devices:
- iPhone 2G/3G/3G[S]/4
- iPod Touch 1G/2G/3G/4
- iPad
- Apple TV 2
Step 1: Start iTunes 10.1.2 and put your iOS device into DFU mode.
iPhone/iPad/iPod touch:
- Connect your iOS device with your Computer.
- Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds.
- Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds.
- You device should now be in DFU mode.
- Connect your Apple TV with your Computer via microUSB.
- Now reboot your Apple TV by holding down Menu + Down buttons together for around 6 seconds.
- After reboot, immediately hold Menu + Play until you see the message in iTunes saying that Apple TV in recovery mode is detected.
Step 4: Now start iTunes again and select your iOS device from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” button (“Shift” button on Windows) on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update”) button in the iTunes and then release the “Shift” button. Select the required custom .ipsw file and restore it.
That’s it! iTunes should now be able to restore your iOS device to the latest iOS 4.2.1 custom firmware without any problems. Hopefully you wont get any 16xx errors during restore this time around!

We told you last week about Microsoft’s press conference at Mobile World Congress where the Redmond outfit showed off its upcoming integration between Windows Phone 7 and the Xbox Kinect.
Microsoft showed off a video of a chap playing Rally Ball – a game where a Kinect player has to hit flying balls with their body. The integration with WP7 comes where a phone can be used to actually control the balls being thrown. All very exciting, if fairly pointless. If only we could do the same with our iPhones…
This is where the guys at Supertouch come in. Now thanks to some wizard-like Kinect hackery, it is now possible to play a game very similar to Rally Ball but with an iPhone and iPad being used as the accessories. It’s not quite as flash as the WP7 integration but for a 1.0 hack it’s very impressive stuff. Check out the video for the scoop.
We still question the long-term appeal of such a game and/or mobile integration, but the fact that it’s even possible could open up a world of possibilities for the future.

According to a report by AppleInsider, AT&T has provisioned the use of Personal Hotspot feature to a developer running iOS 4.3 Beta.
The much talked about “Personal Hotspot” feature was introduced with the release of Verizon iPhone 4, running iOS 4.2.6. This feature allows up to five Wi-Fi devices to connect and share iPhone’s cellular data connection.
Beta versions of iOS 4.3 includes Personal Hotspot functionality for GSM iPhone 4, but it is subjected to carrier’s decision, and additional fees.

Starting from iOS 4.0, Apple completely cut off the support for aging original iPhone EDGE and iPod touch first-generation. Their decision of course was justified because of the low RAM found in these first-gen devices which were released back in 2007.
While iOS 4.2.1 is still available for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G, they are barely capable of running it, and that too without the goodness of multitasking, wallpapers and Folders.
But all is not lost as the iPhone jailbreak community has now come up with a mod, which brings the complete look and feel of iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone 2G, 3G and iPod touch 1G and 2G. The mod is basically based on the iPhone OS 3.1.3, to replicate the experience of iOS 4 on the first and second generation iPhone and iPod touch.
This custom firmware, dubbed WhiteD00r, includes everything from: wallpapers, new semi transparent dock (and UI), backgrounds, all new icons from iOS 4.x, Voice Control, multitasking, video recording, and more. Full list of features can be found here.

The Developer behind the popular TinyUmbrella program is now said to be working on a new tool dubbed TinyPwn which will allow you to create and customize the iOS custom IPSW files.
TinyPwn: Mac/Win/Linux ipsw customization tool. Will allow scriptable modification of the ipsw via a simple custom API. (and moreWe don’t have much details on it yet, except the fact that it will be supported across multiple platforms (Windows, Mac and Linux).)

Facebook Messenger, developed by Crisp App, is a recent inclusion in the App Store which helps you make Voice over IP (VoIP) calls to your Facebook friends even if they are on browser. The app is built over Facebook’s API to connect to the Facebook servers, however, the VoIP feature has been developed by Crisp App Limited. Compatible with your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, Facebook Messenger requires you to have a minimum of iOS 3.1.2.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, a Chinese carrier named China Telecom has managed to unlock the CDMA based Verizon iPhone to run on their CDMA network.
A screen shot from a Sina Weibo account registered to the Guangzhou branch of China Telecom shows an image of what appears to be a Verizon Wireless iPhone4 next to a Guangzhou China Telecom employee badge. The Chinese text above reads: “CDMA iphone4 registered, for the first time we invite everyone to feast their eyes!!!”We have already reported about Verizon’s iPhone being a world phone, with both dual mode GSM and CDMA chips. Now it will be interesting to see if the iPhone Dev-Team will take the challenge of creating a public unlocking solution for the CDMA-based iPhone 4 on Verizon so that we can make it work on other CDMA networks like Sprint in US.

Even though Apple didn’t attend MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2011, but Apple’s iPhone 4 took the top honors among all the smartphones when it was awarded “Best Mobile Device” award at the Global Mobile Awards ceremony.
The nominees for the “Best Mobile Device” award included: Apple iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire, LG Optimus 7 (running Windows Phone 7) and BlackBerry Torch 9800.

This new version of PwnageTool and Sn0wbreeze also incorporates kernel based GreenPois0n exploit, which means that you can now create untethered 4.2.1 custom firmware files without the upgraded baseband so that you can unlock with current version of Ultrasn0w.
Simply follow the step by step instructions in the video embedded below to create custom 4.2.1 IPSW file without the upgraded baseband to jailbreak your iOS device.
Once you are done with the jailbreak, you can unlock your iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G on the old baseband using Ultrasn0w 1.2.
NOTE: You can also use this with iPhones which are flashed on 06.15 baseband so you can restore with this CFW (custom firmware).

Earlier today, we published a report about some of the details of iPhone 5 leaked straight from the component suppliers of iPhone. Surprisingly, based on the report, the Apple’s new iPhone will feature a 4-inch display which will help Apple compete in display size with the counterpart Android sets.
However, inclusion of 4-inch display could be a harder decision than it sounds for both, Apple and the customers. Will the display fit in the current encasement? The iPhone Dev Team has just released official version of PwnageTool 4.2 which incorporates the new kernel based exploit of GreenPois0n for creating full untethered iOS 4.2.1 custom firmware files. Almost all iOS devices are supported except for iPod touch 2G.

Just like the recently released PwnageTool for Mac, Sn0wbreeze 2.2 also incorporates the kernel based GreenPois0n exploit for untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak.
The highlight feature of Sn0wbreeze 2.2 is the new “Baseband Preservation Mode”. This new mode enables current iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G users to preserve their baseband while upgrading to iOS 4.2.1 so that they can unlock using existing version of Ultrasn0w.

Free access to The Daily for iPad has been extended to February 28th, beyond its original two-week trial period which expires today. Could this mean that Apple will release iOS 4.3 on 28th of this month?
For those of you who don’t know, The Daily for iPad which was released earlier this month relies on in-app recurring subscription which are said to be part of iOS 4.3. What this means is that The Daily cannot charge customers for recurring subscriptions until and unless Apple releases iOS 4.3 to public.
This extension of free trial for The Daily suggests that we will probably have to wait till the end of this month for public release of iOS 4.3.

A new report from Digitimes claims that the next-generation iPhone 5 will feature a 4-inch display to take on Android-powered phones head-to-head as the battle for the supremacy in the next-gen smartphones heats up. They have received this piece of info directly from the component suppliers.
The component suppliers noted that the production lines for Apple’s next generation iPhone have begun testing, and Apple is interesting in expanding the screen size to 4-inches to support the tablet PC market as the vendor only has a 9.7-inch iPad in the market.Another report from the same source claims that iPhone 5 will sport a faster A5 processor ( perhaps?) to take on the likes of recently announced Dual-CoreSamsung Galaxy S II, while the iPad 2 will feature an enhanced version of the current A4 chip.

According to Digitimes Research, the iPad 2 will support an enhanced version of the A4 and the A5 will power the iPhone 5. TSMC will initially produce the improved A4, and could likely become the exclusive manufacturer of the A5.
Skype has rolled out an interesting update today to their iPhone app in the version 3.0.1. It adds an extra feature to Skype’s video capabilities which were first introduced in December last year. The new feature let’s you make video calls to TVs, of course, the one’s which support Skype (number of Samsung sets do the job).

Despite having a redesigned antenna, it seems like iPhone 4’s “antennagate” isn’t over it. After taking it through their regular test, iLounge has discovered that the CDMA based iPhone 4 on Verizon suffers from the same antenna issues that plagued the original GSM iPhone 4, which was launched back in June last year.
the CDMA iPhone 4 can still lose substantial cellular signal strength when held in the prior “death grip” position, as well as Wi-Fi signal when held in a different position, in each case noticeably slowing or completely stalling the reception of data.The so called “death grip” or “death hug” in CDMA iPhone 4 case affects both cellular and WiFi signals:
The problem with Wi-Fi reception appears when the device is held snugly in landscape orientation with two hands, a position common when playing games or using the widescreen keyboard. Prior to the Verizon iPhone 4’s launch, sources told iLounge to be on the lookout for the issue, which was being referred to as the “death hug.” It should be noted that although early Apple-sanctioned reviews of the Verizon iPhone 4 claimed that the antenna problems had been fixed in the CDMA model, the same reviewers failed to notice the antenna problems in their original coverage of the GSM model.

This is the same chipset as the Droid Pro world phone. It supports both GSM and CDMA—which means that Apple could have supported GSM!So the CDMA iPhone could actually have been a ‘world phone’. Surely now it’s becoming clear that the iPhone 5 will make the next logical step and be one universal handset meaning it will work on both CDMA and GSM networks?
Why didn’t they? It may be that it was easier to design antennas for a CDMA-only phone-this phone supports two cellular frequency bands, while Apple supports five bands in the GSM version.
Of course, it wouldn’t be the first time Apple hasn’t done the obvious thing!
Almost everything else is unchanged. The vibration motor however has been moved and is reported to ‘feel’ different. Not earth-shattering news!
