We were quite bedazzled by the HTC Incredible S after our hands-on at MWC, but it's the auto-rotating icons for the capacitive buttons that left us most intrigued. So we went back to the HTC booth to try to make sense of it all. From what we were able to observe, there's some optical trickery happening here: the icons appear to be glittering and shimmering depending on viewing angle as if lit through a prism, half-mirror or grate of some kind. We think that a pair of LEDs are used to project the intended icon onto the glass surface via either a combination of prisms and half-mirrors, or via horizontally and vertically polarized grates. HTC just unveiled its MWC lineup a few hours ago, including the ChaCha and the Salsa, which both possess dedicated Facebook buttons (all the cool kids have Facebooky phones these days). AT&T, however, just issued a statement to let the world know that it'll have a Facebook-dedicated HTC handset by later this year. Now, there's no word on which phones are AT&T-bound just yet, but a spokesperson told All Things D's Ina Fried that the carrier will have at least twelve Android phones on offer this year.


This morning HTC announced its 7-inch Flyer tablet, and unlike the hoards of Android tablets we've seen in the last couple of months, it's got something that frankly reminds us a bit of Microsoft's original tablet push... a stylus! The Flyer doesn't come with just any old capacitive stylus, however -- HTC has worked with N-Trig, the company that has made digitizers for convertible PCs like the Dell Latitude XT, to implement a much more accurate writing or doodling experience. And well, it basically makes it unlike any other Android tablet on the market right now. We spent some time with N-Trig and the Flyer today, focusing quite a bit on the new stylus and "Scribe" software, as HTC calls it -- hit the break for some details on both the software and hardware and a short video of how that pen actually works when put to the screen.

The hardware


 

The Flyer has a capacitive touchscreen with what's been known as an active digitizer, although N-Trig's hesitant about using that term to describe its wares. Basically, like most convertible tablet PCs, the battery-powered (or "active") pen communicates with the screen and relays its pressure, positioning, etc. Naturally, that means that the Flyer uses a special N-Trig panel (it's actually the company's latest G 3.5 panel) and stylus. Nope, it won't work with a regular pen or sharp object (not that you'd start sticking your brand new tablet with random pointy objects!)

All those logistics aside, the true beauty of a solution like this is how it blends the responsiveness of regular finger input with an extremely accurate inking one. You'd think the screen was your typical capacitive screen, until you put the stylus to it. Unlike capacitive styli, you don't have to press extremely hard or worry about totally missing your on-screen target. And not to worry, N-Trig says the AAAA battery-powered pen battery should last about a year and a half -- so you'll have a bit of time before you have to run out to the drugstore and pick up a new pack of Energizers.

The software 

 

But a tablet's hardware is only as good as its software, right? Well, considering Android was built primarily around finger input, the stylus certainly adds a new (and rather unexpected) dimension to Google's mobile OS, which is why HTC's focused quite a bit on adding some pen-based applications. We don't know about you, but we've never really wanted to use a stylus to select applications or add widgets. That said, HTC seems to be off to a decent start in terms of developing software on top of Android 2.2. Anywhere within the OS, you can tap the pen on the screen to take a screenshot and then instantaneously start writing or doodling over that image. You can then easily share it out via e-mail, etc.

It's also designed a Notes application that integrates with Evernote. You can take notes, change the color of the ink, etc. Additionally, you can scribble over images in the image gallery. In action all those things worked quite well, especially for its beta status. You will also be able to use the top button on the pen to select text and the button to erase. That's really all there is at the moment in terms of software -- or, at least, that's all HTC is demoing. We'd certainly like to see much more, including some sort of OCR software -- you know, the stuff that converts writing to editable text. Undoubtedly, that would make a ton of sense and be a great keyboard alternative on a tablet like this.


Outlook

It's really too early to make a call on what HTC is doing with the stylus and Scribe -- it's certainly unique and it seems like a very useful solution for those that love to take notes with a physical pen. Ultimately, however, our concerns are centered around the fact that Android was built around a finger and that virtually no apps out there right now take advantage of the pen input. However, if HTC can manage to build out the inking software experience and integrate it throughout the OS, we're sure those who still believe in the power of the pen and want to use a tablet as a content creation device will be all over this.

The press-shots that we posted about yesterday? Yes they were real, as announced today by HTC at Mobile World Congress. The two phones namely, HTC Chacha and HTC Salsa have dedicated Facebook button, with a more customized Sense UI running on Android 2.4 to have more focus on the world’s largest social network.

The dedicated Facebook button on both the portrait QWERTY based ChaCha and the 3.4-inch touchscreen based Salsa is context-aware, which means that it will gently pulse “with light whenever there is an opportunity to share content or updates through Facebook”.

Just a few days ago we heard that HTC might be prepping some lower-end devices with dedicated Facebook widgets, and well, here they are. The two devices -- one featuring a full keyboard and a less ugly one with full touchscreen -- definitely have a Facebook button, and while we know nothing of specs yet, various sources have reported that Facebook updates will be streamed directly to the widget, the camera will upload directly to Facebook, and the phones, which will run a stripped down Android build, will have minimal storage. We're not soothsayers, but we have a feeling we'll know more tomorrow, when HTC's MWC press event gets under way. Hit the source for a shot of the other phone.

 With the likes of INQ all set to release their own Android phone that ties straight into Facebook, today we learn that HTC is getting in on the action too.

According to a report by the Financial Times, the Taiwanese handset manufacturer is readying its own hardware that is expected to be powered by Google’s Android operating system.
Unlike the INQ Cloud Touch approach of hooking basic phone features straight into the Facebook ecosystem, HTC will go down the route of simply adding a dedicated Facebook button to the handset itself.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has gone on record in the past admitting that the social network’s focus is shifting toward mobile. Getting dedicated hardware buttons that take users straight to their friends’ activity added to phones, along with the more integrated approach of INQ certainly fits the bill.

It’s nothing new that the much-loved HTC HD2 can be hacked in order to install either Androidor Windows Phone 7, but how about dual-booting?

The clever people at XDA-Developers have sussed out a way to install both operating systems onto the one SD card, effectively giving the users the choice of which OS to run at startup, writes PocketNow.
Now before everyone runs out and starts hacking their beloved HD2, be warned. This isn’t a simple process and all manner of nastiness can occur if things don’t go according to plan. If they do though, just think how cool your friends would think you are!
Not that you aren’t cool already, obviously!

Microsoft and HTC made it official that the HTC HD2 won’t be getting the Windows Phone 7Android 2.2 Froyo upgrade although the hardware supports it. But that didn’t stop the hacking community from dumping a Windows Phone 7 ROM on the HD2, yes you read that right! You can now boot Windows Phone 7 on your HD2 alongside Windows Mobile 6.5, Ubuntu, MeeGo, or Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

 
The unofficial Windows Phone 7 ROM comes to us in courtesy of the Dark Forces Team, but the downside about the whole deal is; Live services don’t work, in other words you don’t have access to pretty much everything that involves using your Live ID, but we have our fingers crossed that in the future this issue will be fixed.

QWERTY fans, rejoice: at this point, we're pretty sure this thing's getting announced this week, seeing how it's out and about in retail packaging. Here's Sprint's EVO Shift 4G in all its in-the-wild glory -- and yes, it turns out it's definitely called the EVO Shift 4G, not the EVO 4G Shift, since we've got the name spelled out on the official branded box here. As a refresher, this phone's shaping up to be the EVO 4G's keyboard-equipped cousin, albeit with a lower-res camera (5 megapixels), a smaller display, and -- seemingly -- no front camera. For some, that could be an acceptable tradeoff... and it's conceivable that we'll see it on sale within a few days considering the flurry of retail leaks we've witnessed.  Search Amazon.com for htc evo 4g phone

So what if nobody has bothered to announce it yet? Sprint's upcoming EVO Shift 4G Android handset has turned up on Amazon's wireless outlet, albeit with the EVO's spec sheet. We were getting excited about an 8 megapixel camera with HD video capture and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing imager until we realized those specs probably didn't belong to the EVO Shift 4G -- thanks to a note describing this phone as having been "released in June, 2010." The product title is unequivocal, however, and offers you the EVO Shift 4G slider, to have and to hold, for $200 on a two-year contract. Clearly someone's got his or her EVOs mixed up and has HTC's second 4G cat for the Sprint network out of the bag a little early.

 
Update: The product image is user-submitted so we can probably disregard it. Still, Amazon's got HTC's unannounced phone up on its site, giving us the closest to official confirmation we've had yet.
 

Apple's AirPlay might be getting all the attention lately but it's hardly the first solution for wirelessly streaming media to the television. Far from it. In 2003, the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) formed with its first set of interoperable products hitting the market in 2004. Since then, the alliance has certified thousands of products supported by more than 245 member companies, 29 of whom are listed as "promoter members" including such heavyweights as Sony, Nokia, Samsung, Toshiba, Verizon, AT&T Lab, LG, Qualcomm, Cisco, Microsoft, Panasonic, Intel, HP, and Motorola. Pretty much everyone but Apple. Recently, HTC joined the DLNA ranks with the introduction of two smartphones -- the Desire Z and Desire HD -- and a tiny media streamer known as the HTC Media Link, HTC's first attempt to gain a foothold in the living room. Over the last week we've been testing the Desire Z (a Eurofied T-Mobile G2) with the Media Link, lazily streaming video, music, and images around the house using a myriad of sources and controllers from Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, and Western Digital. How did it perform? Click through to find out.


Hardware


 

To say that HTC's Media Link is small is an understatement. It measures just 71.5 x 45 x 8-mm which is about two-thirds the length and width of a credit card and about as thick as a stack of nine. It's so small that we thought that our friendly government import agents had stolen it from the box that had obviously been jimmied open for inspection while en route to our European test lab. The DLNA 1.5 hardware is easily dwarfed by HTC's modular wall plug (which is already pretty small). As a result, the streamer's placement is easily overwhelmed by the tension of the attached microUSB-to-USB and miniHDMI-to-HDMI cables that come bundled with the device. Not that these are complaints, it's just surprising to see a media streamer this small when we're used to the relative bulk of more traditional streamers from Roku, Western Digital, and Popcorn Hour. The only other remarkable physical feature on the Media Link is an unremarkable button on the front with an LED indicator letting you know if the device is on and serving up WiFi.

One thing that we miss is a 3.5-mm jack to give us more control over the audio output. The Media Link is so portable that you're bound to pack it up and use it in situations where a decent amplifier isn't available -- like, say, in a conference room with a projector or connected to a hotel room TV. Situations ideally accompanied by a set of small but powerful portable travel speakers.


Setup


 

Out of the box there isn't much to setup and it should take no more than five minutes to have up and running. Unfortunately for us, we plugged the Media Link directly into the HDMI jack of our projector -- a two year old Epson EH-TW420 -- and nothing happened. We rebooted the Media Link a few times, reinserted the HDMI cable and still, nothing. No signal detected. Before shipping it back to HTC though, we attached the Media Link to a Viewsonic monitor and voila, success. The Media Link sprung to life with a familiar HTC Sense startup chime and graphics.

 

From there we could change the default password and tell the streamer to either attach to our local WiFi network or act as a standalone 802.11n 5GHz WiFi hotspot. We tested it both ways, though for home use it certainly makes sense for it to be joined to your local WiFi network. Otherwise, you'll be forced to constantly switch networks whenever you want to make the jump from internet access to streaming media over to the Media Link. Regardless, we like the flexibility here.

It's worth mentioning that HTC is developing a Media Link app that will help you quickly switch between the Media Link hotspot and your home network. It's headed to the HTC Hub but it wasn't yet available for download at the time of this review.


Streaming 






 You won't be regularly streaming 1080p Matroska Blu-ray rips from your storage constrained handset so we began our testing with a real-world scenario: using the Connected Media app found on the Desire Z to stream The Engadget Show podcast video already synchronized to our handset. This worked perfectly, whether the Media Link was setup as its own WiFi hotspot or as a member of our home WiFi network (located about 30 feet from our wireless router) without any hiccups in performance, thus erasing our initial frustration with the projector setup. Same with our on-device audio collection and the images and video captured by the Desire Z's camera -- it just worked.



In general, streaming content that the Media Link recognized (more on that later) stored on our HTC Desire Z worked most of the time -- we'd say about one in ten uses resulted in some kind of unexpected behavior. Foibles ranged from the wrong picture being displayed when selecting individual images from a photo album, volume controls not responding, unexpected delays or resets, and large videos unceremoniously quitting (and requiring a restart from the beginning) while trying to scrub forward or back. We were disappointed to discover the lack of album art support on streamed music and our inability to fast forward or rewind our streaming audio or video -- you can only skip to the next or previous items in the playlist. Other issues that frustrated the experience included the occasional WiFi dropouts, and our inability to ever get the Media Link to work with our home theater projector. Nothing to get too worked up over, mind you, because when it worked (which was most of the time) it was fantastic and dead simple to operate. And the fact that we could use the Desire Z to select compatible media from our Windows 7 laptop (Microsoft built DLNA support into the OS) and Mac running the Twonky Server (sold separately) was just icing on the cake. We even managed to sneak a Galaxy S in to share some photographs.

Unfortunately, not all DLNA devices are built the same. Like many alliances, vendors grow weary of debating the merits of their enhanced feature suggestions in hopes of gaining formal ratification in the published standard. As such, in time, it becomes difficult to know where the DLNA spec ends and the manufacturers' customizations begin. We were already baffled by the stated Media Link requirement for "a DLNA-compatible HTC phone" coming into the review. Was that tacit admission of incompatibilities or just an attempt to promote HTC's own products? After all, DLNA certified devices should play nice with eachother, right? Not always, as we discovered when testing with the very popular Galaxy S from Samsung and WD TV Live HD from Western Digital.



Galaxy S owners are already familiar with DLNA, or at least they should be since the AllShare player / server is one of the handset's primary features. Things looked promising in our early testing allowing us to stream photographs captured by the Galaxy S to the HTC Media Link when using the S or Desire Z as the controller. We started having difficulties, however, when we began to test audio streaming between the Galaxy S and Desire Z. Although we could stream audio fine from AllPlay direct from the Galaxy S to the Media Link, we could not initiate the stream from the Galaxy S when using the HTC Desire Z as the controller. When trying to browse media from the audio folder the Desire Z kicked back a curious error message saying "no photo or video files" could be found -- even though we were looking for audio. And yes, we had the AllPlay server configured to automatically accept all video, audio, and picture requests. We also ran into what seems to be a codec issue when trying to stream H.264 videos captured natively to a .MP4 container by the camera on the Galaxy S. Unsurprisingly, it also didn't work when using the Desire Z as the controller to launch the stream off the Galaxy S. We even transferred the Galaxy S video to the Desire Z and still couldn't get it to stream to the HTC Media Link even though it would play fine locally on the HTC handset.

Just for kicks, we decided to further test cross-platform DLNA compatibility between the Desire Z and a Western Digital WD TV Live HD we have sitting on our network. Again, while things generally worked, we had issues that manifested themselves by the WD box showing up as busy (even though it was idle) and therefore unable to accept a content stream from the Z. The most irritating issue, however, was watching the Desire Z connection drop immediately after initiating a stream to the WD box such that it could no longer control the content playing on the display.


 

Perhaps this partially explains why Apple -- a very prominent DLNA Alliance holdout -- doesn't want to get caught up in the non-standard standards nonsense that results in the kind of incompatibilities we saw when testing the HTC Media Link and Desire Z with the DLNA certified Samsung Galaxy S handset and WD TV Live HD streamer. Other than 3G (UMTS) video calling, it's hard to think of a more widely deployed and useful technology that's as underutilized as DLNA. In fact, your TV might already support DLNA media streaming if your set features built-in WiFi or an Ethernet jack. It's more commonly implemented than you think. And like Apple's proprietary FaceTime video calling solution, AirPlay is another shameless attempt to exploit industry incoherence and the consumer ignorance that has grown up around DLNA in order to differentiate Cupertino's own products. A shame really, but we'll take it if they can improve upon the user experience in typical Apple fashion. But we digress.

 

We then turned our attention to testing the Media Link's codec support. The spec sheet claims video support for 3GP, WMV, MPEG4, H.263, H.264, and XVID; audio support for AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, AMR-WB, MP3, and WMA; and GIF, JPEG, BMP image support. We started by hammering the H.264 codec with a number of unprotected H.264/MPEG-4 AVC movie trailers created using a variety of H.264 profiles in both 720p and 1080p formats -- all of which were packed into MP4 containers. Most of these failed to stream to the HTC Media Link from either the Desire Z handset, Windows 7 PC, or Mac running Twonky Server. One 720p file did manage to stream to the Media Link even though it wouldn't play locally from the Desire Z's microSD card. Another 720p file streamed fine off the Windows 7 PC for playback on the Desire Z but not the Media Link -- leading us to wonder how it was possible that the Media Link didn't support at least as many codecs as HTC's own handset. The 720p Engadget Show recorded to H.264 in a MP4 container worked fine in every test as did a few DVDs ripped to H.264 in .AVI containers. Unfortunately, after testing a couple of dozen sample files, it was clear that the Media Link suffered from a rather narrow list of codec support such that we were ultimately surprised anytime a new test file actually streamed.

By comparison, the WD TV Live HD successfully streamed every test file over DLNA, and at 1080p when available, and connected to our home theater projector.


Wrap up


 

We suspect that many of you would be pleased to wirelessly stream the photos and home videos captured by your new HTC smartphone to the living room television. A proposition made all the more compelling if you could also stream your collection of digital videos, audio, and photos from any Windows 7 PC, Twonky-fied Mac, or big fat DLNA-compliant NAS server. Unfortunately, the €119.99 / £99.99 HTC Media Link is hamstrung by a high price tag and rather paltry list of supported codecs that pales in comparison to $100ish DLNA streamers like Western Digital's incredibly flexible and feature rich WD TV Live series. Hell, even Roku is promising DLNA support in the near future. So we can't recommend the Media Link as the primary, cross-platform gateway to stream your digital media collection to the living room television. However, it could prove useful as a highly portable accessory that lets you quickly share the media captured by your new HTC handset to an HDMI-equipped display. But what really sells us on the Media Link is the idea of setting up a portable WiFi network in the hotel room that lets us stream compatible media off the laptop to the hotel television while lying in bed using HTC's Desire Z or Desire HD as the remote control -- naked of course, holding a turkey leg. Unfortunately, we suspect that HTC had hoped for a larger, more genteel demographic with its first foray into the digital living room.
 
 
Running Android on HTC's venerable HD2 is old hat -- but historically, you've had to run it off microSD storage, which isn't an optimal situation for an operating system you might hope to use as your primary. Now we've finally got what appears to be the first solution allowing you to drop a nearly stock build of Android on the HD2's internal NAND memory, freeing up external storage for your usual collection of family photos, showtunes, and PowerPoint presentations left over from your WinMo 6.5 days. We've no doubt that this hack is a little dicey -- especially considering the herculean level of hacker effort that went into making it happen -- but if you've got an HD2 lying around that needs a new lease on life, it might be worth a shot.

HTC Corporation has released a full-fledged YouTube client for Windows Phone 7 devices. Unfortunately though, this YouTube app is limited to HTC’s handsets only, running the exclusive HTC Hub.

Microsoft’s current solution for YouTube on Windows Phones is a mere plugin, which basically opens YouTube web app in browser (not the HTML5 version as seen on iOS and Android devices) and then allows you to playback videos using the native Windows Phone 7 video player. Microsoft’s YouTube plugin also integrates with Zune’s music and videos hub, allowing users to go through their YouTube playback history.
Here’s to a hope that Microsoft or other OEMs such as Samsung will soon come up with a full-fledged YouTube app for other Windows Phone 7 devices.
YouTube for HTC’s Windows Phone 7 devices can be downloaded right now for free from either HTC Hub, or from the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace.

Back in November 2009, we reported that you could get the HTC Sense UI on your iPhone running iOS 3.x We then repeatedly got requests to upgrade that theme so that it works on newer devices running iOS 4.x. And now, a much better looking HTC Sense theme (lockscreen only) has been released for iPhone 4 which is inspired by the latest version of HTC Sense found on Desire HD. It even has a weather widget that updates regularly and it all looks awesome on iPhone 4’s Retina Display. Follow this very easy guide to get this working on your iPhone.

Prerequisites:
  1. You will need to jailbreak your iPhone 4. Follow our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak your iPhone with Redsn0w on iOS 4.2.1, or with Limera1n on iOS 4.1 if you haven’t already.
  2. Download the required theme AndroiHD Lockscreen from here.
  3. Download and install Winterboard from Cydia.
  4. Download and install OpenSSH from Cydia.
  5. Download and install Lockscreen Clock Hide from Cydia.
  6. Any SSH client of your choice for Windows or Mac. Recommended client for Mac is Cyberduck, and for Windows is WinSCP.
Step 1: Download and install Cyberduck for Mac or WinSCP for Windows. Enter the following details to login to your iPhone:
Cyberduck
  • Server: The IP address of your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. Settings –> WiFi –> <Your Network Name>
  • Username: root
  • Password: alpine
  • Protocol: SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)
WinSCP
  • Hostname: The IP address of your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. Setting –> WiFi –> <Your Network Name>
  • User name: root
  • Password: alpine
  • Protocol: SCP
Step 2: Locate the AndroiHD Lockscreen file you downloaded earlier and extract it to your desktop.
Step 3: Navigate to private/var/stash/Themes.xxxx folder on your iPhone using the SSH client you are using and drag and drop the AndroiHD Lockscreen folder in this location as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 4: Once copied, open the folder and left-click on "AndroiHD.js” file and click edit.

Step 5: A new window will open and now here you will need to locate the string var YWCode = ’32452’. What you need to do is replace this number sequence with the one that corresponds to your city.

Step 6: To find the number that corresponds to your city, go to Yahoo Weather by clicking here and enter the name of your city. Then take the number out of the URL as shown below and put this number in the string you located earlier.

Step 7: Save this file and then close your SSH Client. Now start Winterboard on your iPhone and enable AndroiHD Lockscreen theme.

Once your iPhone re-springs, you should see a beautiful new HTC Sense lockscreen with a working weather widget !

Why look at static images when you can get a more 3D view of the urban scene? Google's Maps for Mobile 5 just got previewed on stage by Andy Rubin at D: Dive Into Mobile -- with a prototype Motorola Honeycomb tablet, no less! The biggest visual change is dynamic map drawing: vectors instead of flat images that scale without render hiccups and will show the buildings fleshed out for over 100 cities -- we gotta say, it looks great. Even more fun is that you can now use two fingers to tilt and rotate around the map (in addition to moving and pinch-to-zoom, of course). We've been told it's a much snappier experience, and the storage for these vectors is much smaller than the current images, which brings us to... offline caching. Maps will keep on file the locations that you go to (and search) most often, and it'll be able to reroute while offline in Navigation. You'll still need a connection for altering the route altogether -- sorry, subway-hoppers -- but once you go, even if you stray, you'll still be rerouted back on track.

Most modern Android phones from the original Droid onward should be able to enjoy most if not all the new features, depending on hardware capabilities (3D rendering) and "distinct multitouch" hardware support -- the Nexus One, interestingly enough, supports vector maps but not the rotate functionality because it lacks the latter multitouch requirements. Google sent us a list of devices that support 100 percent of 5.0's features, which you can find after the break. The update is due out in the "coming days," according to Rubin. Great way to kick off Nexus S' launch, then.
