Facebook Messenger, developed by Crisp App, is a recent inclusion in the App Store which helps you make Voice over IP (VoIP) calls to your Facebook friends even if they are on browser. The app is built over Facebook’s API to connect to the Facebook servers, however, the VoIP feature has been developed by Crisp App Limited. Compatible with your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, Facebook Messenger requires you to have a minimum of iOS 3.1.2.
The app also adds other features to the Facebook chat that most desktop chat clients would offer including sharing pictures, maintaining chat history etc. It also supports Push Notifications and delivers all the messages to you instantly.
Following are the main features that the app offers.
- Chat with Facebook friends from your iPhone/iPod Touch
- Easy-to-use interface
- Get replies instantly with Apple Push Notifications
- Make free VoIP calls to Facebook friends on desktop or iPhone/iPod Touch
- Easily send photos from your album or camera
- Keep track of all your chats and calls with message history

Facebook has introduced two more relationship status options in addition to the ones currently there which include Single, In a relationship, Engaged, Married, It’s complicated, In an open relationship, Widowed, Separated and Divorced.
The two new indicators are for the folks from LGBT community. While the folks at US, UK, Canada, France and Australia can already choose between the two new options introduced: “In a domestic partnership” and “In a civil union”, they will be rolled out to other countries soon. Moreover, these relationship indicators will not appear in regions where same sex marriages are already legal.
In a conversation with Mashable, a representative at Facebook said:
This has been a highly requested feature from users. We want to provide options for people to genuinely and authentically reflect their relationships on Facebook. In past, the social website has been really supportive to the LGBT community. Facebook has also worked in collaboration with GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) to stop the bullying of LGBT community.
Since there are states where same sex marriages aren’t allowed but "Domestic relationships" and "Civil Unions" exist, it is a step that had to be taken by the social network to preserve the rights of LGBT folks.
With the introduction of this new feature, Facebook has taken away frustration of many of it’s users who would openly like to express their relationship statuses. However, on the other hand, the feature isn’t very welcoming for all the countries around the globe, which is why it hasn’t been rolled out to them yet.

CEOs of Apple, Google and Facebook are reportedly going to meet with President of the United States, Barack Obama, on Thursday in San Francisco, reports ABC News.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who recently took a medical leave of absence from his company, and Google chief executive Eric Schmidt will be among the attendees of President Obama’s event with business leaders in San Francisco Thursday evening, a source familiar with the event tells ABC News.
Earlier today, ABC News reported that one attendee would be 26-year-old founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, according to a source familiar with the meeting.Steve Jobs, who is currently on a leave of absence from day-to-day work at Apple will join Mark Zuckerberg and Eric Schmidt for a meeting with President Obama.
In October last year, Steve Jobs and Obama met to discuss a number of issues such as the economical situation, education, innovation and technology.
Hopefully, this is also going to debunk those shocking rumors about Steve Jobs’ health, according to which he only had “6 weeks to live”.

The press-shots that we posted about yesterday? Yes they were real, as announced today by HTC at Mobile World Congress. The two phones namely, HTC Chacha and HTC Salsa have dedicated Facebook button, with a more customized Sense UI running on Android 2.4 to have more focus on the world’s largest social network.
The dedicated Facebook button on both the portrait QWERTY based ChaCha and the 3.4-inch touchscreen based Salsa is context-aware, which means that it will gently pulse “with light whenever there is an opportunity to share content or updates through Facebook”.

HTC raises the bar for mobile social phones with HTC ChaChaTM and HTC SalsaTM
BARCELONA, SPAIN – Mobile World Congress – February 15, 2011 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today announced two new phones built entirely to be social, combining the simplicity, ease-of-use and depth of HTC SenseTM with the power and connectivity of Facebook®. As part of an extended portfolio of six new HTC Sense-based devices being unveiled at Mobile World Congress, HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa feature a dedicated Facebook® button for one-touch access to the key functions of the Facebook service that are integrated throughout the HTC Sense experience.
“HTC has always understood that different people want different things and the new HTC ChaCha and Salsa offer special new ways to experience Facebook on a mobile device,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “With more than 500 million active users worldwide, Facebook has become synonymous with the social web and we wanted to create the ultimate socially connected phones with mass market appeal.”
“We have worked closely with HTC for several years on bringing Facebook to their devices and HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa are the next stage,” said Henri Moissinac, Head of Mobile Business for Facebook. “HTC has brought Facebook to these two new devices in an innovative way enabling people to connect and share easily whenever they want, wherever they are.”
The Facebook button on HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa is context-aware, gently pulsing with light whenever there is an opportunity to share content or updates through Facebook. With a single press of the button, you can update your status, upload a photo, share a Website, post what song you are listening to, ‘check in’ to a location and more. For example, you can take a photograph of friends on your phone and upload it instantly to Facebook by simply pressing the button. Or let your friends know what song you’re listening to by pressing the button while listening to music on the phone. The track is automatically identified and shared on Facebook.
The new devices feature Android Gingerbread 2.3.3, the latest version, and use the latest iteration of HTC Sense to integrate Facebook throughout the HTC Sense experience. When you make a phone call, the dialer screen displays your friend’s latest status and photos, and even tells you if their birthday is approaching. The same updates are also displayed when you receive a call from a Facebook friend. You can also use your phone’s existing contacts to help you connect with them on Facebook or personalize your handset further with a number of new, Facebook-branded widgets.
The HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa smartphones make it simple to stay in touch with your friends using Facebook Chat and Messages on your phone. Your Facebook messages and conversations are integrated within your phone and appear within your text and email inboxes alongside your regular conversations.
Stay connected with the smartphone for the Facebook generation – HTC ChaCha The HTC ChaCha smartphone is designed to provide a seamless, social experience by enabling you to stay in touch with your friends anytime, anywhere. The unique tilt design shapes the display and physical QWERTY keyboard so it is easy to view and comfortable to type. Capture special moments in crisp, High-Definition detail or video chat with your friends using the dual cameras, including a 5-megapixel color camera with auto focus and LED flash and a VGA front-facing camera. The ChaCha smartphone also brings the Internet to your fingertips with a 2.6-inch, 480 x 320 resolution landscape touch screen.
Your Facebook friends never felt closer – HTC Salsa
Boasting the same deep Facebook integration as the HTC ChaCha smartphone, the HTC Salsa smartphone provides a fast, high-performance smartphone experience. Capture the moment in high-resolution stills or video with the 5-megapixel camera and immediately share it with friends on the generous 3.4-inch, 480 x 320 resolution touch display. Upload your photos to Facebook at the touch of a button. For face-to-face conversations on the move, the VGA forward-facing camera enables high-quality video calling.
Availability
The HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa smartphones will be available to customers across major European and Asian markets during Q2 2011. In the United States, HTC plans to bring this unique user experience to market later this year exclusively with AT&T.
Gemalto, a firm known for digital security, has released it’s SIM card which allows all the GSM phones to have a built-in Facebook client. This allows all phones with minimal features to have access to Facebook, an effort to make the social network a standard on GSM. It is obvious that SIM based client won’t provide as much features as clients on smart-phones do but it will provide you text based menus which will let you carry out basic tasks like status updates, pokes, friend requests, wall posts etc.
We worked closely with Gemalto on their Facebook for SIM product and believe it will be another easy and affordable way for people to stay connected through Facebook on the mobile phone of their choice. Facebook for SIM creatively combines technologies from some of our existing mobile solutions that especially are attractive for people with feature phones and have limited or no data plans with a mobile operator. Through the Facebook application on the SIM card people can: Update their status and view comments on it; write on their friends wall; receive notifications; find friends on their SIM phonebook. The toolkit is part of GSM standards and will hence provide services on every GSM set. Everything will be carried over the class 2 text messages. Class 2 text messages are directly sent without the user intervention.

With the likes of INQ all set to release their own Android phone that ties straight into Facebook, today we learn that HTC is getting in on the action too.
Unlike the INQ Cloud Touch approach of hooking basic phone features straight into the Facebook ecosystem, HTC will go down the route of simply adding a dedicated Facebook button to the handset itself.

The rumors of some sort of Facebook phone arriving sometime in the future have been circulating for a while now, with HTC being touted as a hardware partner. Now though it seems minnows INQ are hard at work getting ready to bring a handset to market.
British firm INQ sent channel manager Andrew Bennet over to TechCrunch’s officers to give them the scoop on the INQ Cloud Touch, a smartphone running a heavily modified version of Google’s Android.
According to the TechCrunch article and indeed the video they posted, it’s clear that this is more than just an Android handset running the Facebook app. The entire experience is very tightly tied into the Facebook system, with the homescreen showing your friends’ activity stream front and center.
Other integration includes apps such as the phone’s calendar. Here the OS pulls not just your upcoming events into a calendar, but also those of your friends, as well as birthdays. Perfect if, like me, you tend to forget just about everyone’s birthday!
Perhaps the real bombshell is the integration with Spotify. The European music streaming service is the main media manager on the INQ handsets which is great news for those of us able to access the service. Thankfully, reports are that Sporify is close to securing a deal allowing the service to be made available state-side. Until then, Spotify will just work as a standard music player instead of a streaming service.
INQ are aiming for a May launch for their Cloud Touch and Cloud Touch Q (which is the same handset but with a QWERTY keyboard) and as yet aren’t saying what we should expect to pay, though it’s not expected to be marketed as a premium handset. In other words – cheap.

Facebook hasn’t released any official client for iPad yet, this is probably because their CEO and Founder Mark Zuckerberg believes that iPad isn’t as mobile as our smartphones. This has surely given other developers the opportunity to create their own Facebook apps for iPad. For example, ‘Friendly for Facebook’ is one of the most popular Facebook app for iPad.
And now, Facepad is a new challenger in the game. Facepad for iPad was released last week and it has clearly taken some design clues from the popular Twitter client called Twitter for iPad.
The similarities are obvious, but not in a bad way. The app works using windows or tabs, so you can open multiple profiles and check them out in seconds. People who have used this app seem to have really like it. It has had over a million ad impressions in its first twelve hours of release. This doubled after twenty-four hours, and now it is the 15th most popular app on the iTunes App Store.
Best of all, it is available for free. Follow the link below to download it right now!

Facebook for Windows Phone 7 has been upgraded to version 1.1, bringing support for Facebook’s Places and Photo tagging feature.
Official change log of Facebook 1.1 for Windows Phone:
New features in version 1.1:Unlike any other popular smartphone OS in the market, Windows Phone 7 has great deep integration for Facebook. But still there are some features that can only be accessed via the official client.
- Places
- Photo tagging
Compared to iPhone and Android clients, Facebook for Windows Phone 7 is still missing the Chat and Push notifications feature. Also missing is the support for live tile feature which is quite surprising, given that it was touted as one of the differentiating factors of Windows Phone 7 as a platform.
Facebook 1.1 for Windows Phone 7 devices can be downloaded right now for free from the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace.

Facebook has outgrown every other social network, it has outgrown Flickr and Picasa and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg has made history by becoming the youngest self made billionaire. He also grabbed the Time’s Person of the Year Award, beating the much controversial Julian Assange. There is everything credible about the social network and it keeps adding more value. I recall Facebook launching its Face Detection feature last year, using which Facebook detected similar faces in numerous photos of an album and tagged each one of them in one go. Well that’s improving, starting from today!
Today the social network boosted the usability of its photo product by enabling auto tagging of photos. How exactly? Facebook uses its face recognition feature to detect a person and then utilize your network of friends as reference to place tags on the people visible in the picture. With over a 100 million photos being tagged each day I think the new update would make tagging easier for all those photo lovers.
But, what about privacy? I for one won’t like being tagged without my permission or at least I would like to be notified to grant permission. This is exactly what the Facebook’s VP Product, Chris Cox had to address. Cox mentioned that users do have the choice to opt out of the feature altogether, disabling anyone to auto tag you using this feature. Seconding that he also mentioned that this won’t be used for a network wise face search and would strictly be applicable to the network of friends.
The feature will be rolled out to around 5% of the social network users initially. It’s just the start of it, so don’t be surprised if it tags Harry as Lynda, vice versa.

Since the launch of Digg v4 earlier in August, the staff at Digg has been continuously rolling out new features to grab their lost user-base back. This has definitely given me a better user experience (in terms of features) but the social news site hasn’t been able to put together the scattered community.
One reason why Kevin Rose, the founder of the company, wanted to evolve the site with the new Digg was "Twitter" insisted Daniel in a write-up at NewsWeek. Williams, the present CEO, however insisted "Twitter and Digg perform completely different tasks". Of course they do, but the redesign of the website was clearly influenced by twitter with "My News" being the primary source to Digg new stories, just like twitter’s timeline.
Moments ago, Digg has launched another interesting feature, which in my opinion is largely inspired by Facebook’s on-site notifications. With the introduction of on-site notifications, Digg provides it’s users a way to keep-up with community’s reaction on the stories submitted/dugg/commented on by the user.
Following are the new notifications rolled out today. Digg notifies the user when someone
- Diggs a story user submitted
- Diggs a story user dugg
- Diggs a story user commented on
- Comments on a story user submitted
- Comments on a story user dugg
Hamad is a pro-digg user. He writes full-time at SmashingLists.
